The vision

When Stanley Whitman opened Bal Harbour Shops in 1965 on the site of a World War II army barracks, his critics said there was no way the first exclusive high end luxury shopping center would succeed.

So called retail experts of the day said his upscale store mix would not fly as back then the mix was to mix anchor tenants like a grocery and hardware store with retail.

Today Bal Harbour Shops has been designated the most productive mall in the world, with sales of $2,555 per square foot. The mega luxury mall beat out Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace by the wide margin of $755 per square foot.

That’s according to Shopping Centers Today, in its September 2012 edition.

Three generations of Whitmans

Bal Harbour Shops was designed to celebrate the balmy beauty of South Florida. Ideally situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay in the affluent village of Bal Harbour, the lushly landscaped, open-air mall didn’t look or feel like any other center in America, according to a history of Bal Harbour Shops.
